⚡️ A Developer's Nightmare?

PLUS: Falcon 180B challenges Meta's supremacy in LLMs

It’s Thursday. AI is making strides in the music world. Not only has Warner Music signed a record deal with the first AI pop singer, but an AI-generated song mimicking the voices of Drake and The Weeknd has been submitted for Grammy Consideration. Wild times.

Today’s Highlights:

  • AI is reshaping software development, says GitLab

  • A new open-source LLM outpaces Meta's LLaMA

  • Employers overlook AI training despite growing demand

DEEP DIVE

AI's Growing Role in Software Development

GitLab says that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer optional in software development. Almost 25% of firms are already incorporating AI in day-to-day workflows, signaling a sea-change in the developer mindset.

“The vast majority (83 percent) of respondents agreed that it is essential to implement AI in their software development processes to avoid falling behind...”

— Extract from the GitLab DevSecOps Report

According to GitLab’s report, developers are finding their stride with AI, with 90% of those using machine-learning tools today expressing confidence in using them in their daily work.

Makes you wonder what’s the top AI use case, doesn’t it?

  • It's not entirely about robo-generated code, but natural-language chatbots in documentation and automated test generation took the lead with 41%.

  • Close behind were AI-powered enhancement features like code change summaries and suggestions for code review, making for a smoother programming experience.

But AI isn’t all roses: About 48% fear AI-generated code may lack copyright protection, while 39% worry it could introduce security vulnerabilities.

Developers also wonder if AI is a friend or foe for the longevity of their career paths, with 57% believing AI may replace their roles within five years.

Don't be quick to discard your coding brains, though. The report points out that AI-generated code still needs human verification to avoid errors and security breaches.

As GitLab concludes, integrating AI into software development might be 'inescapable', but so is the need for human oversight - at least for now.

TLDR

Falcon 180B - the most powerful open-source LLM: TII's Falcon 180B outshines previous open-source LLMs, including Meta's LLaMA 2, boasting 180 billion parameters and trained on 3.5 trillion tokens. Released on Hugging Face, Falcon 180B is on par with Google's commercial models and is expected to make further progress with contributions from the research community.

Salesforce to introduce AI-driven Slack feature: Salesforce plans to pilot generative AI features for Slack this winter. The AI will be able to create channel highlights, generate conversation summaries, and answer information queries. The feature aims at enhancing users' ability to grasp and use conversations—aiming for better accessibility of conversation details.

AI training still not a priority for most employers: According to a survey by Randstad, only 13% of employees received AI training over the past year, despite a 20-fold increase in the demand for AI skills. This discrepancy stands in the way of maximizing AI potential, which could generate up to $4.4 trillion in global corporate profits yearly.

Generative AI to supersede 2.4M US jobs by 2030: Forrester predicts Generative AI will replace 2.4 million jobs and affect another 11 million in the US by 2030, mostly impacting technical writers, social science research assistants, copywriters, and administrative positions.
