Good morning. Adobe has announced a significant update to its AI image creation service, Firefly, that promises to generate more realistic images, vector graphics, design templates, and much more. Let’s dive in.

Adobe Firefly Receives a Massive Update

Adobe is not holding back on its AI commitment, rolling out three generative AI models that make its Creative Cloud more powerful. At Tuesday's Adobe Max event, the company showcased its Firefly Image 2 model—the successor to Firefly AI image generator that powers Photoshop's Generative Fill and two new Firefly models that generate vector images and design templates.

The new Firefly Image 2 offers phenomenally improved image quality— especially high-frequency details like skin texture, foliage, hair, hands, and photorealistic human faces. It offers a higher resolution, bolder colors, and better color contrast, alongside introducing new AI-powered editing for customizing results. Users can adjust the depth of field, motion blur, and field of view of a generated image either manually or automatically.

An innovative addition to Image 2 is the “Generative Match” feature that allows users to match the style of generated content to specific images.

Adobe has also released a new Firefly Vector model for Adobe Illustrator—the “world’s first generative AI model for vector graphics.” This new model lets users generate editable vector images using text prompts that divide each graphic element into groups and layers. Unlike JPEG and PNG files, vector graphics (SVG files) can be scaled to any size without degrading the image quality.

As for Adobe Express, a Firefly Design model that generates custom templates for print, social posts, video, online advertising, and more will be available. It introduces a text-to-template feature that generates fully editable templates for “all popular aspect ratios.”

Even though these models are still in beta, we might soon see them in general availability following the release trend for Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature. The strong push that Adobe is making in AI aligns with the fast-paced AI innovations seen over the last year from companies like Canva and Microsoft.
