DEEP DIVE

Baidu, SenseTime Among First Firms to Win China AI Approval

Just a month after announcing temporary measures to supervise generative AI, China finally gets its homegrown generative AI services approved for public use.

Eight AI applications have been registered with China's cyberspace authorities, including Baidu's Ernie Bot, ByteDance's Doubao, Baichuan by Sogou's creator, and chatbots derived from research lab work at institutions such as Tsinghua University and Chinese Academy of Sciences.

This comes as a breakthrough moment after decades of relatively laissez-faire tech policies.

"In the race of AI, China is not merely focused on the speed of development. Greater emphasis is being laid on maintaining control over innovation.”

The tech giants were previously limited to showcasing their ChatGPT counterparts to industry insiders. However, this new milestone approval signifies the initiation of rapid generative AI adoption—potentially influencing mass adoption across China.

In fact, within a day of the filing announcement, Baidu’s Ernie Bot soared to the top of the free iOS apps in China, providing a noticeable boost to the company's share price in Hong Kong.

Is this the beginning of a new generation of AI in China? How will it impact the tech landscape in the country and beyond? Only time will tell.
