PLUS: Prophetic AI pushes the boundaries of consciousness
Good morning. CEOs clearly see the future—and (unsurprisingly) it's powered by generative AI. While their eagerness to invest in AI is at an all time high, human capital is seemingly taking a backseat. Let’s dive in.

Generative AI Investments Top Priority for CEOs
A new report by KPMG indicates that the enthusiasm for investing in AI among top executives is at an all-time high. A staggering 72% of surveyed CEOs regarded generative AI as their companies’ top investment target.
Interestingly, this growing interest in AI signifies a diminishing priority for human capital. The report reveals that 57% of respondents are focusing more on procuring new technology than on upskilling their workforce.
And when it comes to return on investment (ROI), CEOs exhibit considerable patience. KPMG finds that while 23% expect a positive ROI within 1-3 years, they are largely optimistic, with 62% expecting an ROI in 3-5 years.
But what's holding the CEOs back in their AI pursuit?
Ethical dilemmas top the apprehensions list with respondents casting doubts about the effective implementation of generative AI both due to moral quandaries and cost & technical challenges.
The dual nature of AI with respect to cybersecurity had 85% of CEOs acknowledging its ability to identify malicious attacks but voicing concerns over increased risk exposure.
Regulatory gaps also sparked worries—81% believed a lack of clear rules could obstruct their companies' success, with 77% arguing the need for AI regulations to parallel climate commitments.
While the report indicates a potential seismic shift in the traditional workplace dynamics, it also serves as a reminder that the evolution of AI calls for structural measures to mitigate its immanent risks and challenges.

TLDR
OpenAI may develop proprietary AI chips to combat shortages: With growing demands and ongoing GPU shortages, OpenAI is contemplating designing its own AI chips or acquiring an AI chip manufacturer. OpenAI's plans follow similar mоves by Google and Amazon as AI chip production becomes a priority amidst the rise of GenAI.
DeepMind’s AI Enables Better Generalization in Robotics: Google DeepMind reveals Open-X Embodiment, an AI system that effectively controls diverse robot types, reducing the need for individualized training. The system utilizes a dataset with over 1 million episodes, 500 skills, and 150K tasks, and transformer-based models, enabling increased success rates in task completion.
Prophetic AI explores consciousness through lucid dreaming: Aiming to enhance understanding of consciousness, neurotech firm Prophetic AI is working on the Halo headset. The device uses ultrasound to induce lucid dreams, regarded as "particle accelerators for consciousness". Despite criticism over its potential effects on sleep and mental health, the company plans to release the headset in 2025.
The IP Risks of GenAI: GenAI tools, trained on vast sets of data from all over the internet, have led to copyright lawsuits. Some vendors, like Amazon and IBM, defend customers in these cases, while others have clauses to avoid liability. With IP as a growing concern regarding generative AI, the protective stance of vendors could influence customer choices.
