DEEP DIVE
Google Introduces Assistant With Bard
Introduced at the 'Made by Google' event, Assistant with Bard fuses the inherent capabilities of Google Assistant with the generative and reasoning faculties of Bard. This AI-powered personal assistant can handle tasks through text, voice, or images, and even initiate actions autonomously. These features will be released on Android and iOS mobile devices in the coming months.
Extending Reach to Google's Apps
In an opt-in setup, Bard dives into Google apps (such as Gmail and Drive) to provide personalized responses. You can ask your Google Assistant to catch you up on the important emails missed this week—and Bard will curate essential emails.
This feature extends Bard's ability to integrate with Google's apps and services, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Maps, YouTube, and even Google Flights and hotels through "Bard extensions."
"It can hear through the microphone. It can speak to you through voice output. It can see through your camera. And it can even take actions to help you out."
Stepping Up Personal Task Management
Beyond digging emails, Bard's expanded capabilities lend a hand in managing personal tasks. It might be writing captions for your social media posts, planning a trip, or making a grocery list.
Users can communicate with Google's Bard Assistant in three ways: through voice, typing in queries, and Bard's Google Lens integration. The Assistant can then double-check answers for AI hallucinations, a frequent issue with artificial intelligence.
Bard on Mobile Devices
As an AI-powered device constantly by your side, Bard can now also interact with mobile users in several ways. Long-pressing the power or home button on Pixel devices or select Samsung phones, will offer a conversational overlay, enabling Bard to respond to what's on the screen.
For now, the updated Google Assistant with Bard will launch in select markets, with plans to gradually include more users. An eventual expansion to other platforms is also in the pipeline.
