Google and DeepMind Team Up to Watermark AI-generated Images
Grab your spyglass, because Google's AI research division, DeepMind, has jumped into partnership with Google Cloud to release a tool called SynthID.
It embeds an invisible watermark into AI-generated images to help identify their origins and prevent the spread of false information.
Here's how SynthID works:
It embeds a watermark into the pixels of an image. This watermark is invisible to the human eye but can be detected by algorithms.
The watermark remains in place even if you add filters, change colors, squash, stretch, or otherwise modify the image.
It uses a pair of AI models (one for watermarking and one for identifying) trained together on a diverse set of images. These models act as detectives that can suss out watermarked images.
Although AI watermarking is not new, the introduction of SynthID might start the push toward establishing a norm in the industry.
With third-party adoption potentially in the pipeline, this could be the beginning of a whole new era in AI image identification.
