⚡️ Google SGE Updated

PLUS: OpenAI hits $1.3B in annualized revenue

It’s Friday. Big news from Google: Its AI-powered search tool, Search Generative Experience (SGE), is expanding its skillset to create images and write drafts. Let’s dive in.

Today’s Highlights:

  • OpenAI hits $1.3B in annualized revenue

  • Google promises to cover AI-related copyright lawsuits

  • Northwestern revolutionizes AI energy efficiency

DEEP DIVE

Google’s AI-Powered Search Now Generates Images

Google's SGE now brings the ability to generate images based on prompts—akin to Bing's support for OpenAI's DALLE-E 3. Plus, SGE also assists users in draft writing, where customization like changing the output length or adjusting the tone is possible.

New Image-Generating Power

With this new addition, users can specify the type of image they want— drawing, photo, painting, etc., and SGE, powered by Google's Imagen text-to-image model, will produce four fitting results. SGE also lets users tweak the prompt or download images as .png files. The same feature will also apply when using Google Image search.

However, Considering the past misuse of AI image generation, these features are strictly limited to users above 18 and have been shielded by policies to prevent the creation of harmful, misleading, explicit, or inappropriate content. Photorealistic faces or images mentioning notable people are blocked to avoid spreading false information.

Enhanced Writing Assistant and More

Another striking update is SGE's reinforced writing assistant skills. It now creates different types of drafts, longer or shorter, with tones ranging from serious to casual.

Both the image generation and alternate drafts features now come with export options. Drafts can be exported to Google Workspace apps, while generated images can be saved to Google Drive.

Initially, these features will be available to a fraction of SGE users and will eventually roll out to a broader user base. For now, these features are only available in English to users in the United States who have opted to use SGE via Google Search Labs—even though SGE itself has extended its reach to India and Japan.
