⚡️ Human-Like AI

PLUS: OpenAI addresses 'catastrophic risks' of AI

Good morning. Human-like robots may no longer be the stuff of sci-fi movies, with researchers working on humanoid agents for more natural and intuitive simulations. Let’s dive in.

DEEP DIVE

The New Paradigm of Humanoid Agents

Researchers from the University of Washington and NVIDIA have proposed an exciting development: humanoid agents for human-like simulations of generative agents.

These generative agents, built using ML models and NLP techniques, already power our chatbots and virtual assistants, providing engaging and natural user interactions. Their abilities extend from answering questions to making recommendations and even composing music or poetry.

But how about making these agents even more human-like?

Humans often tend to constantly adapt changes to their plans according to the changes in the physical environment. Taking inspiration from human psychology, the researchers proposed a two-system mechanism: System 1 for the intuitive and effortless process of thinking, and System 2 for the logical process of thinking. They've introduced aspects like basic needs, emotions, and the social relationship dynamic into the agents.

What happens when these agents fail to interact with others? Negative feedback hits—loneliness, sickness, and tiredness.

“Our system will help researchers such as computational social scientists to be better able to simulate human behavior insilico before doing further studies in the real-world. This is particularly helpful if real-world studies are difficult or costly.”

The researchers have used a Unity WebGL interface to present the stimulated agents' statuses over time. Users can choose from one of three worlds to track an agent's status and location.

TLDR

Google Maps’ Immersive View and AI enhancements: Google announced significant AI updates for Maps, including an "Immersive View" for planning routes, deeper Lens integration for local navigation, more accurate real-time information, and enhanced EV charging station details. The update also improves in-app mapping accuracy and search functionality, drawing data from billions of photos.

OpenAI addresses 'catastrophic risks' of AI: OpenAI is creating a readiness team to tackle potential catastrophic risks posed by AI. The team will track, evaluate, forecast, and mitigate AI-related issues including nuclear, chemical, biological, and radiological threats, autonomous replication of AI, cybersecurity, and deceptive capabilities of AI.

Amazon Ads introduces AI for ad image creation: Amazon Ads has announced a beta program for AI-generated ad imagery. The tool allows clients to produce context-richer ads with placed product images in various modeled environments. The service primarily targets clients lacking in-house capabilities or agency support.

Shutterstock introduces AI-powered image editor: Shutterstock enhances its platform with AI editing capabilities powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 2. Available to all users, the feature works only with existing stock images and will not accept AI-altered submissions.
