DEEP DIVE

Meta Unveils a 'Universe of AI'

In the annual Meta Connect conference, Zuckerberg announced large-scale AI enhancements across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. In a bid to integrate state-of-the-art AI into apps that billions of people use, the new AI updates aim to revolutionize user experience with targeted AI offerings.

Meet MetaAI

Shattering the traditional voice-only engagement, Meta’s AI Assistant interaction spans voice, text, and physical gestures. Users can identify real-world objects, get information about specific locations or artworks, and document their moments through photos and videos.

Star-studded AI Chatbots

Modeing icons like Snoop Dogg and Naomi Osaka, Meta introduces 28 AI personality chatbots as conversation aides on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. However, the knowledge base of these chatbots, built on the Llama 2 LLM, is largely time-bound, limiting them to pre-2023 information.

AI Studio for Businesses & Creators

Making AI-driven customer interaction a reality, Meta launches AI Studio for businesses to design AI chatbots across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger services. The company also plans to release a sandbox tool—empowering users to experiment with creating their AI.

Unique AI Stickers & Photo Restyling

Meta is introducing co-creation and AI editing tools for images on Instagram and plans to roll out similar features in other apps. Also, using Llama 2 and Emu image generation models, text prompts can be transformed into stickers.

Additionally, Instagram will roll out two unique features: Restyle and Backdrop, empowering users to transform images or collaborate in producing AI-generated images.

Ray-Ban Smart Glasses

Slated for an October 17th launch, the new Ray-Ban Smart Glasses incorporate Meta AI. Users can engage with the AI to spark creativity and control the glasses—just by using their voice.

Zuckerberg, however, noted these are early-stage launches with potential pitfalls, with privacy and accuracy being top concerns. However, Meta assures that it has undertaken measures to safeguard its AI technologies, conducted red-teaming, and trained its AI to prevent unsuitable or incorrect responses.
