DEEP DIVE

Meta's Llama 2 Long Surpasses Leading LLMs

Meta Platforms recently introduced new AI features to its popular apps—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—at the annual Meta Connect conference held in Menlo Park, California. Alongside these feature updates, the social media giant quietly unveiled its exceptional AI model, Llama 2 Long on arXiv.org.

Based on Meta's open-source Llama 2, this AI model has been refortified with longer training sequences, enabling it to generate superior and more insightful responses to extended user prompts. As a result, it outperforms some of the leading competition in generating responses to long user prompts, including OpenAI's GPT-3.5 Turbo and Claude 2.

By infusing Llama 2's 7 billion, 13 billion, 34 billion, and 70 billion training parameter variants with an additional 400 billion tokens-worth of more extended text data sources, Meta researchers fashioned Llama 2 Long. This model can handle distant tokens that appear infrequently or have fewer relations to other information fragments.

How does this model fare in real-world scenarios?

The Llama 2 Long, tested for various tasks like coding, math, language comprehension, and answering prompted questions, shows a promising performance, commendably surpassing its predecessor Llama 2.

Where does Llama 2 Long fit in your list of AI models?

  • Improved performance on various tasks by incorporating Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).

  • Can generate responses on a broad range of topics, like history, science, literature, and sports.

This development signals an impressive leap for Meta's open-source approach towards generative AI, proving that open-source can indeed hold its ground amongst closed-source models.

However, like most things in AI, the validation and widespread acceptance of Llama 2 Long will ultimately be determined by its long-term performance and the tangible benefits it brings to AI adopters.
