DEEP DIVE

Stability AI Launches Portable Open Source LLM

Stability AI broadens the horizon for portable device technology with the release of an experimental model, Stable LM 3B, optimized for digital devices such as laptops and handheld gadgets.

Despite boasting a compact 3 billion parameter size designed for portability it stands tall against larger models, proving efficiency and effectiveness can come in small packages.

"...do not let its size fool you; Stable LM 3B is highly competitive - it outperforms the previous state-of-the-art 3B parameter language models and even some of the best open-source language models at the 7B parameter scale."

— Stability AI

The compact model shines in its lower operating costs, resource consumption, and energy use, making it an accessible and environment-friendly model for the masses. It features fast text generation and can be fine-tuned for multiple applications like programming assistance.

With Stable LM 3B, technologies with advanced conversational skills, such as creative writing assistance, can now flourish on the edge or even on personal computers.

But more development is needed: Stability AI emphasizes that Stable LM 3B is still in its experimental phase and needs specific customization for applications and safe performance.

The future, however, looks promising. Stability AI, known for its image AI Stable Diffusion, continues to expand its range of LLMs under the ‘StableLM’ umbrella. From StableLM-Alpha's initial 3 billion parameter models, the company sets its eyes on reaching a staggering 175 billion parameters.

Stable LM 3B is available for download on the Hugging Face under the Open Source CC-By-SA 4.0 license.

Zoom Docs to launch in 2024, offering built-in AI functions: At Zoomtopia 2023 today, Zoom announces Zoom Docs, a collaboration-oriented workspace that integrates Zoom AI Companion for auto-generating content and summarizing meetings. Offering better pricing compared to similar tools offered by Google and Microsoft, Zoom Docs will be included in their existing subscription plans available from 2024.

Microsoft sets AI agents in conversation with AutoGen: Microsoft's open-source Python library, AutoGen, enables developers to create AI agents powered by LLMs like GPT-4. These agents interact and accomplish tasks through natural language messages. Compared to other LLM application frameworks, the modular and efficient framework reportedly accelerates coding speed by 400%.

Asana to add AI features: Enterprise work management platform Asana is integrating AI to upgrade their service, aiming to enhance work efficiency. Proprietary technology, Work Graph, allows the new features to provide clarity and accountability. AI inclusions such as a smart editor, smart fields, and smart summaries are designed to save time and resources.

Arc browser introduces AI-powered features: The Arc browser is launching AI-powered assistant ‘Arc Max’, developed with OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and Anthropic's models. Features include chat interactions, automated renaming of pinned tabs and downloaded files, and summary previews of links. Further development and refinement will depend on user feedback over a 90-day test period.
