DEEP DIVE
Unlocking the Secrets of Language Models with AI and Vector Magic
Language models can successfully encode functions into compact numerical vectors known as Function Vectors (FVs), unveils an enlightening study. This breakthrough discovery comes about through applying causal mediation analysis to autoregressive transformer language models.
The research, conducted by Northeastern University, focuses on the intriguing realm of in-context learning in LLMs. The method hinges on identifying the existence of FVs within transformers and discovering how they contribute to the complex task of language modeling.
So, what's the role of FVs?
They are compact task representations that are context-robust and can trigger specific procedures in diverse settings.
They house an understanding of the function's output space, enabling them to kickstart new complex tasks.
Crucially, FVs indicate the presence of internal abstractions for general-purpose functions in LLMs
Yet FVs are not without their challenges. They sport a complicated reconstruction process. Nevertheless, their potential for semantic vector composition and their versatility across contexts are traits that warrant further exploration.
Given the tantalizing promise offered by FVs, this research points toward more comprehensive studies into their internal structures, utility for complex tasks, and greater generalizability across various models, tasks, and layers.
