ChatGPT Celebrates One Year
ChatGPT has hit a thrilling milestone on its first anniversary, reaching a landmark 110 million downloads for its mobile app and raking in nearly $30 million in revenue.
The mobile app, launched in May 2023 on iOS and followed by an Android release in July, has capitalized on the ChatGPT Plus subscription at $19.99 monthly. This premium offering entices users with perks like priority access during peak times, swift responses, and a sneak peek at upcoming enhancements.
Despite being pricier than many other subscription services, ChatGPT Plus has soared in consumer interest since its introduction outside the U.S. in February 2023—a testament to the AI’s appealing features.
A snapshot of other AI chatbot apps reveals fascinating trends. Poe, an app that integrates ChatGPT among other AI personalities, boasts 1.18 million monthly users. Yet, ChatGPT isn't leading the pack in revenue despite its impressive download figures. Alternatives like ‘Ask AI’ offer competitively priced tiers and have been in the mobile space longer, drawing users with diversity in subscription models.
But downloads tell another story: ChatGPT’s apps clinched a whopping 18 million new installs in just one week after debuting on Google Play, sustaining an average of over 4 million downloads weekly thereafter.
Geographically, India and the U.S. are head-to-head with the highest number of ChatGPT app downloads, contributing to 18% and 17.5% respectively.
Usage patterns offer further insights: Although ChatGPT scores highly on downloads, Android data places it third in terms of frequency of use. Chatbots like Character AI and Chai entail more repeated engagement, perhaps due to their interactive nature, but with new GPT iterations, patterns might evolve.
A year in, ChatGPT's mobile presence is impressive, but it's not just about numbers. While Apple and Google have their eyes on other apps for their 'app of the year,’ the growth of ChatGPT speaks to a robust user base and the transformative potential of AI in our daily lives.
