PLUS: Musk and Zuckerberg school Congress on AI
Good morning. DeepMind's algorithm revs up Google Maps by promising to bring more personalization into the count. What does that mean for your commute? Let's find out.
Today’s Highlights:
Salesforce, Columbia, and MIT jointly innovate a "Chain of Density" prompt
Berkshire Hathaway’s $162B AI portfolio
Musks and Zuckerberg tutor the Senate on AI legislation

Google DeepMind Enhances Route Planning By 24%

Example of the 360M parameter sparse model finding and correcting a data quality error in Nottingham
Google's algorithm is revamping how we navigate—promising to make route suggestions in Google Maps more personalized.
Google's new model consisting of 360 million parameters considers factors such as travel time, road conditions, tolls, personal preferences, and real driving data from Maps users.
Based on an approach called "Inverse Reinforcement Learning" (IRL), the system learns from user behavior using a new IRL algorithm called "Receding Horizon Inverse Planning (RHIP)".
RHIP dives deep into the complexity of route decision-making. While it uses intensive stochastic models for nearby route options, it conserves power by switching to deterministic methods for further areas.
And the result?
In tests, RHIP improved route suggestions' accuracy by a whopping 16% to 24% for driving and two-wheeled vehicles compared to the traditional Maps baseline.

Google Maps improvements in route match rate relative to the existing baseline when using the RHIP inverse reinforcement learning policy.
The largest application of IRL for route planning, RHIP not only triumphs over previous AI systems that struggled to navigate real-world route complexities but also reinforces the scalability of AI performance in relation to data set size and model complexity.
But don't keep your hopes up yet—extensive user testing is needed to ensure its practicality and ability to produce better routes consistently.

Check Mate: Prominent actors reportedly turn to Metaphysic Pro to outsmart deepfake makers.
Betting Big on AI: Almost half of Warren Buffet's $353B stock portfolio is held in just two AI stocks—Apple and Amazon.
Musk and Zuckerberg school Congress: Senate turns to tech billionaires for a crash course on AI legislation.

TLDR
AI Outperforms Humans in Urban Design: AI could improve city design by generating efficient spatial layouts faster than humans, a study from Tsinghua University reveals. Their AI model outperformed human designs by 50%, improving access to services, green spaces, and traffic flow. Despite its potential, the researchers see AI as a tool to assist urban planners rather than replace them.
Chain of Density Prompt Enhances AI Summarization: Researchers from Salesforce, Columbia, and MIT have pioneered a "Chain of Density" prompt that aims to produce more concise, information-dense GPT-4 article summaries. The prompt involves iterative revisions of a basic summary, gradually adding more details—maintaining readability and coherence even with high information density.
U.S. versus China in supercomputer race: Despite sanctions prohibiting access to certain technology, China reportedly has three next-generation supercomputers surpassing the performance of the top-rated U.S. supercomputer 'Frontier'. Although 'Frontier' tops the 2023 Top500 list, the unlisted Chinese supercomputers are causing a stir in the technological community. China remains the largest producer of supercomputers globally.
Homeland Security Introduces New AI Guidelines: The US Department of Homeland Security plans to set new limits for its AI use while emphasizing its successes in tasks such as drug busts. Key principles include effective and responsible use, protection of privacy and civil rights, lack of biases, and transparency.
